South Amboy’s Rich History

South Amboy was built by the railroad. The Stevens family brought the John Bull steam locomotive from England and helped launch the Camden and Amboy Railroad here around 1831, making the small Raritan Bay city a key terminal where rail met the bay. For more than a century it was a busy transportation and industrial town, and that heritage still shows along its waterfront and in its old downtown. Today South Amboy is writing a new chapter: Raritan Bay Waterfront Park opened in 1998 with sweeping views of the Manhattan skyline, and in 2023 a NY Waterway ferry began carrying commuters straight across the bay to New York City.
