Manalapan’s Rich History

Manalapan Township was formed on March 9, 1848, at a meeting of local citizens in Phebe Perrine’s tavern in Englishtown, and its name comes from a Lenape phrase often translated as good land to settle upon. Its defining moment came earlier: on June 28, 1778, these fields hosted the Battle of Monmouth, one of the longest battles of the Revolutionary War and the day George Washington restored his battered reputation. Much of that ground is preserved as the 1,818-acre Monmouth Battlefield State Park. For most of its history Manalapan stayed farm country, then transformed in the 1980s and 90s into one of western Monmouth County’s signature suburban townships.
