Hightstown’s Rich History
The land that became Hightstown was originally acquired by William Penn in the late 1600s, who intended to settle the area with Quakers. The borough takes its name from John and Mary Hight, who established a tavern here in the 1750s, and was officially incorporated on March 5, 1853. Hightstown’s most consequential chapter came in 1831, when the Camden and Amboy Railroad — the first chartered railway in New Jersey and third-oldest in the United States — began stopping here, using the famous John Bull locomotive and connecting New York and Philadelphia through the heart of Central Jersey.
