Hazlet’s Rich History

Hazlet began as Raritan Township, incorporated in 1848 from part of Middletown, and over the next century gave up land to form Keyport, Keansburg, Union Beach, and others. In 1967 residents voted to rename the township Hazlet, after Dr. John Hazlett, whose estate stood near what is now Holmdel Road. For most of the 1800s this was prime bayshore farmland, and growers carted asparagus, peaches, and canned tomatoes to the Raritan Bay docks and, after 1875, to the new railroad for shipment to New York. The postwar decades filled in those farm fields with the suburban neighborhoods that define the township today.
