Englishtown takes its name from the English family, who purchased a large tract of fertile land in Monmouth County sometime before 1730. The earliest record of the area dates to 1688, when an Englishman named James Johnston owned property here. The borough’s most famous chapter came on June 27, 1778, when George Washington established his headquarters at the home of Dr. James English — now known as the Hulse House on Main Street — the night before the Battle of Monmouth. The Village Inn, built in 1728 as a tailor shop and tavern, still stands today and serves as the headquarters of the Battleground Historical Society.
