The Rich History of Atlantic Highlands

Atlantic Highlands has one of the deeper histories of any community on this side of New Jersey. Colonists convened the first Assembly of New Jersey here in 1667. During the Revolutionary War, the area saw raids and counterattacks between loyalists and patriots, and retreating English troops passed through after their 1778 defeat at the Battle of Monmouth. Originally known as Portland Pointe, the borough was officially incorporated on February 28, 1887. In the late 1800s, developers subdivided the area’s farms into the Victorian residential core that still defines the borough today, with the harbor built between 1938 and 1940.

Neighborhoods and Streets

Atlantic Highlands is just 1.3 square miles in size — a compact, walkable borough where the streets follow the natural topography of the headlands. The borough’s most defining feature is its hillside character, with homes terraced up the slope from the bay.

Mount Mitchill is the highest point on the United States east coast south of Maine, rising 266 feet above sea level with panoramic views of New York Harbor.

The Victorian Historic Core surrounds First Avenue and South Avenue, featuring restored 19th-century homes that earned the borough its reputation as the “jewel of the Bayshore.”

Portland Pointe is a senior housing community in the heart of the borough, named for Atlantic Highlands’ original 19th-century name.

Route 36 (Ocean Boulevard) runs along the borough’s southern edge and connects to Sandy Hook, the Highlands Bridge, and the rest of Monmouth County.
